This 'genre' scene was painted as a tribute to the philanthropic work of the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, whose portrait in the shop window is pointed out to a street urchin by a shoe black, the plight of whom was a cause particularly associated with Lord Shaftesbury.

Provenance

Henry Graves probably commissioned the painting ; Mrs Viva King since 1937; with the Christopher Wood Gallery, 1979; Anthony Brodie; with the Christopher Wood gallery.
