This work depicts the eccentric traveller and patron of the arts, Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, Bishop of Derry (1730-1803) seated overlooking Rome.
It is suggestd that he is sitting at the southern tip of the Borghese Gardens. As the Anglican Bishop of Derry, Lord Bristol was unusually tolerant and made valiant attempts to improve relations with the Catholic Church.
