One of only 8 surviving two-handled cups in gold from the reign of Charles II and appears to be the earliest example of a race prize cup.

The cup bears the arms and crest of Sir William Bowes of Streatlam, and his wife Elizabeth Blakiston of Gibside.

Provenance

Bowes Lyon family by descent, sold from Glamis Castle at Christie's in 1948 to Sir James Caird, by descent to Mrs H.Scudamore.
