This drawing is one of a number that David Jones made from the window of his room at Northwick Lodge, Harrow.

As so often in his work, he was keenly aware of the mystical connotations of the image, in this case the relationship of the tree to the Crucifixion. The artist's stay at Northwick Lodge brought him into contact with Harrow School, several of the masters being his fellow lodgers.
