This work is a version of the King's Clock-case, designed by Chambers with richly gilt mounts and strongly contrasting blue john panels is a very fine object.
The design appears to owe a lot to drawings which Chambers made during his visit to Italy, and features of it reappear in his architectural work. Chambers' Franco-Roman style of design very much appealed to Boulton who made the ormolu and blue john case at his Soho factory in Birmingham. The movement was made by Thomas Wright. Boulton made other versions of the clock case soon after the royal commission capitalising on the prestige. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
