Like other prints and drawings acquired by the Walker Art Gallery, this curious sketch belonged to William Roscoe (1753-1831) whose early Italian and Flemish pictures formed the nucleus of the gallery's collection.

Guercino made a number of these fantastic drawings. They do not relate to paintings and were evidently made for the amusement of the artist and his friends.
