This famous painting, charming in sentiment and neo-classical in design, shows the children of Granville, 2nd Earl Gower, afterwards first Marquess of Stafford.

The four dancing children are by his third wife, Lady Susannah Stewart, while to the right stands Lord Gower's daughter by his second marriage. Romney started his career in Kendal in the Lake District and returned there to die.

Provenance

2nd earl Gower; by descent to the countess of Sutherland.
