A fragment of a portrait showing the head and shoulders with black hat and cape, against a crimson curtain.

Fernando de Valdés was archbishop of Granada in 1633. A full length painting exists, but here the sitter is older, suggesting that this portrait is the copy.

Provenance

Jose de Madrazo, Keeper of the Spanish Royal Collection; Sir David Wilkie; Sir George I. Campbell of Succoth; Mr Hugh Borthwick Norton; Mr Angus Bainbrigge.
