The deserter, in shirt and trousers with wrists bound, is taken away by a sergeant and two soldiers of the British Infantry in the dress worn at the time of Waterloo (1815).

In the right foregrould his wife has fainted and is being tended by an older woman. Two old men and a boy look on. One of 26 gifts to 19 museums by Sir Alec Martin or Sir Alec and Lady Martin through the Art Fund between 1935 and 1967.
