This work has a romantic vision of uncultivated nature, inhabited by rustic figures and lit by glowing shafts of sunlight.

Cortona painted few pure landscapes, but nature featured prominently as a background to his religious pictures. The drawing was jointly purchased by Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Barber Institute of Fine Arts.
