The top covered in crimson velvet with gold fringe is supported by foru carved lions, the underside canvas is inscribed.

Its design and the carving of its supporting lions is deliberately antiquarian in spirit, to match St. Edward's throne.

Commissioned from the London firm of Bailey and Saunders by the Lord Chamberlain for the Coronation of George IV in Westminster Abbey on 20 July 1821.
