The Fool was a recurring symbolic image in his paintings.

From a private symbol, he grew in the artists' mind to signify a statement of optimism in the troubled war and post war years. Often portrayed in Collins' local Devon landscape, the Fool wanders, dreams, sleeps, fully absorbed in his various activities with aninnocence of spirit. This 'Head' shows him gazing beyond the viewer, wrapt in contemplation.
