The expressive power of Munter's treatment of Anna Aagard is enhanced by her feeling for her subject, who is shown seated smoking a pipe, with her left arm thrown back in a posture reflecting both her personality and her frame of mind. The painting is introspective in mood, with a quality of strangeness which seems indicative of Munter's own psychological state, as her long time partner Vassily Kandinsky had just married another woman.
