Like so many of Ingres' portrait drawings, this charming study was made in Rome when he was a pensionnaire at the Villa Medici and largely dependent for his income on pencil portraits of visitors to the city.

It is one of a collection of portraits of the sitter's family all drawn by Ingres at this time.

Provenance

Mrs Marianne Feilchenfeld, Zurich.
