Silver made by the Walker family is much rarer than that of the other Chester families of goldsmiths, the Richardsons, Pembertons and Lowes.

The mug is of the balluster type developed in the early years of George I and popularised in London by such silversmiths as Paul de Lamerie. Many London-made mugs of this pattern have survived but few provincial examples were hitherto known.
