Robson was entirely self-taught and quite early in his career spent a year in the Highlands of Scotland, dressed as a shepherd, wandering in all seasons, painting the mountainous scenery.

He spent some time living in the Lake District in the same house as Robert Hills, who is said to have contributed many of the deer and cattle which feature in Robson's views.
