The Roman Fort at Reculver was built in the latter half of the 3rd century.

After it was abandoned, a Saxon Church was built within its walls incorporating Roman building materials. It has been said of Ward's drawing that 'he was not always a very easy, or even correct, draughtsman but he was an extremely observant one whose work is often forceful and full of rugged character'. This Church was originally built 9 miles from the sea, but is now right on the coast.
