The painting represents, not just the area of Greenwich and Blackheath, but also the view over London almost exactly as it is seen from the windows of Ranger's House.
Even more remarkable, this vista survives almost unchanged today. Hofland adopted a viewpoint on the northern part of the Heath where he could look beyond the houses in Hyde Vale towards the view of London in the distance.
