John Murray of Philliphaugh (1726-1800) was the eldest surviving son of John Murray MP.

His mother was Eleanor, daughter of Lord Basil Hamilton and grand-daughter of William, 3rd Duke of Hamilton. As a portrait painter Ramsay occupies an important position in the period between the end of Hogarth's career and Reynolds' rise to fame. He is celebrated as an unusually sympathetic portrayer of Queen Charlotte.
