The abbey was granted to Dr Thomas Leigh by Henry VIII at the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This painting is thought to be the earliest depiction of the ruins of the historic medieval monastery showing parts of the building which have since disappeared.
Painted for the Senhouse family, Calder Abbey; Thomas Rymer; by descent to Marjorie Rymer Williams, aunt of the vendor.
