Jesse Dale Cast was awarded a Senior Scholarship by the London County Council and studied full time at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts under Albert Rutherston.

From 1922-26 he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London under Professor Tonks. In 1926 he exhibited for the first time at the New English Art Club. From 1930 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and annually at the Royal Academy. After the Second World War he taught at Harrow School of Art, the Central School of Art and Design and Hornsey College of Art where he accepted a full-time appointment and remained for the rest of his teaching career. Part of a gift to two museums by David Cast through the Art Fund in 1988.
