Phadrig na Pib, an Irish 'Pied Piper', was a popular variant of the wandering minstrel.

In this composition he is surrounded by enthusiastic children who wait with their parents at the edge of the village to greet him. Such a picture, with its verdant landscape and well turned-out peasants provided a romantic view of Ireland for a London audience.
