Morris' design for 'Chintz', registered early in 1883, is one of many of his designs on the theme of birds amidst flowers, foliage or fruit.
The printed patterns involved very subtle dye colours and a large number of separate blocks. This admitted effects of great tonal variety and managed to translate Morris' complex designs with almost complete fidelity.
