This ink-pot is of great documentary significance.

Welch or Welsh had long been known as a recorded personality but the appearance of this signed piece, decorated with a bouquet, loose flowers, a dragonfly and quills, dividers and rulers, was the first opportunity to associate a clearly-defined style with the name. On the basis of this piece the Ceramics Department of the V & A were able to attribute parallel examples, unsigned, within the collection.
