A pair of antique Italian doors are memorialised in this sculpture by the Turner Prizewinning artist Rachel Whiteread.

Moulds of the doors from a building in Rome were sent to Whiteread’s studio in East London, where these resin casts were made.

Whiteread is internationally recognised for her sculptures of casts of the spaces in and around domestic objects, ranging in scale from doorknobs to the entire Victorian house she cast in concrete in 1993.

Whiteread studied at Brighton Polytechnic and the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where she produced her first cast of the space around an object in 1988.

The title Due Porte (Italian for ‘two doors’) refers to the origins of the sculpture, which was exhibited in the retrospective of Whiteread’s work at Tate Britain in 2017. It now enters Tate’s collection alongside existing holdings of the artist’s work, which include seven sculptures and four works on paper.
