Carreg Cennen Castle can be seen in the distance, through birch trees, with a winding lane, a man on horseback (talking to a woman) and a shepherd and his sheep in the foreground.

The artist painted more than one picture with Carreg Cennen Castle in the background, one of them featuring a dramatic storm scene. This work, however, presents a peaceful summer view, in bright, fresh colours, placing it among the artist's best works. The Castle itself, about 20 miles from Swansea, is one of the most interesting in Wales, ensuring that the painting and subject will be of considerable interest to the local public.
