This racing trophy, made for the 1787 Doncaster Cup, was presented to George Armytage, winner of that year’s race with his horse Stargazer.

The race was established in 1766 and is the oldest continuing regulated horse race in the world. A unique cup is made each year for the winner; this one bears the mark BL, referring to silversmith Benjamin Laver. Doncaster Museum holds nine winners’ cups in its collection, and this example now joins them there.
