Titus Agbara was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and studied art at Federal Polytechnic, Auchi.

He moved to the UK in 2007 and has lived in Oldham since 2016. Damilola is a portrait of the artist’s friend, a fellow migrant, whose name relates to the Yoruba word for prosperity. A large proportion of Oldham’s population are from black and minority-ethnic backgrounds and Gallery Oldham is keen to reflect this demographic diversity in its holdings. Damilola is the first portrait of a black woman, and the first work by Agbara, to enter the collection.
