This military portrait of the first half of the 18th century shows Major General Charles Cathcart, a distinguished regimental officer of the Scots Greys and colonel of the 7th Horse (later 6th Dragoon Guards), who served for some 38 years in the British Army.

Cathcart joined the army in 1702, aged 18, and fought in the War of the Spanish Succession and against the Jacobite army in Scotland.
