This rare drawing by the Austrian Romantic artist Joseph Anton Koch shows the Schmadribach Falls near Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.

The study, in chalk, pen and ink, was probably made on the spot for Koch’s most celebrated oil painting, The Schmadribach Falls near Lauterbrunnen (1821-22), now in Munich.

Provenance

Acquired as an anonymous work by Brian Sewell (1931-2015) in 1960s or 1970s; sold, Christie’s, September 2016 to an overseas buyer; export stopped. The Museum has conducted an Art Loss Register search and a Metropolitan Police search.
