Father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Marc Brunel's Thames Tunnel is the ancestor of the huge tunnelling machines of today.

These slow moving underground factories that honeycomb our cities are automated developments of Brunel’s prototype drawings. Acquired at auction by the Brunel Museum with support from National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, V&A Purchase Grant Fund and Friends of the National Libraries, this fascinating archive illustrates the beginning of modern tunnelling.
