Naum Gabo made Linear Construction in Space No 1 during his years in Cornwall, and it is the first sculpture in which he used stringing with nylon filament.
The work might have been a prototype for a larger piece, but Gabo considered each of his works to be originals. This particular piece is thought to be the third in a sequence of 16 versions and was made for Gabo’s friend Jack Pritchard, the influential British manufacturer of avant-garde furniture.
