This superb 18th-century portrait has recently been attributed to Richard Wilson, a pivotal figure in British art of the period.

Wilson was born in Wales and rose to become a society portrait painter before shifting his attention to landscape. The identity of the sitter is speculative but thought to be Miss Mary Jenkins (1731-90), who once owned the painting.

Provenance

By descent in the sitter's family; purchased anonymously, Sold Sotheby's 1991; Sold Christie's London 2006; Alderson Antiques.
