William Müller was born in Bristol and studied painting under the landscape artist James Baker Pyne.

He later became acclaimed for his romantic landscapes of Bristol and its surroundings and is the best-known artist of the Bristol School. Müller painted On the River Lyn, Devon, on a visit to Lynmouth in May 1844. The sublime scene shows boulders by the water’s edge and green overhanging trees. The picture now enters the collection at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, alongside 75 oil paintings, 226 drawings and watercolours, and two sketchbooks by Müller.
