Working here with archival photography, Barbara Walker is known for her studies of race and power.

This work on paper, with its erased black soldiers shown only in silhouette, is part of the series 'Shock and Awe'. This group of work looks at the contributions of black men and women to British war efforts since 1914. Walker's piece joins Herbert Art Gallery's collection of other works exploring empire and colonialism, as well as a number of pieces relating to the First World War.
