Adrian Heath trained at the Slade School of Art in London and taught at Bath Academy of Art from 1956 to 1976.

He was a key figure in the post-war abstract art movement in Britain and in 1953 published a short history of the origins of abstract painting. In this lyrical canvas a dark mass of forms on the left contrasts with gentle curves and lighter tones on the right. It was painted soon after Heath started teaching in Bath, and now becomes the first oil painting by the artist to enter the cityÂ’s gallery.
