Emil Nolde joined the Dresden Expressionist group Die Brücke in 1906, and his passionate paintings and prints became highly influential among other members.

Scribes belongs to a group of five etchings on Biblical themes made by Nolde in 1911. His subjects and composition often developed out of marks already on the plate and this important etching displays his remarkable style and experimental technique.
