This oil painting depicts one of the lavishly decorated rooms in the now demolished Smeaton Mansion in East Lothian.
Patrick William Adam had settled nearby following extensive travels painting the landscapes of Rome, Venice and Russia. He spent the remainder of his life recording the interiors of local society households, of which this is a prime example.
