Simon Carroll, who died aged 45 in 2009, is celebrated in the world of contemporary ceramics for his radical and expressive reworking of traditional slipware.

Square Vessel Rounded Feet, recently shown in a solo exhibition of Carroll's work at the Victoria & Albert Museum, displays his bold approach to shape and decoration and, according to the distinguished potter Alison Britton, illustrates how his 'freely painted surface developed with the bravura of the forms, was built up and clawed into by his hands, sloshed with slip and glaze, keeping a sense of the plasticity of the clay'. Like Bernard Leach, Carroll lived and worked in Cornwall and this piece will now be displayed alongside examples of Leach's pots to illustrate how English slipware has developed over 90 years of practice.
