The artist Brian Hatton was born in Hereford and spent most of his life there, before he was killed in action aged 28 while serving in Egypt during the First World War.

Hatton was considered a young painter of outstanding promise, and this model of a wax cow – his only surviving sculpture, created when he was only ten years old – shows his intuitive grasp of form.
