One of the most significant artists from the parish of St Agnes, Edward Opie exhibited 49 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1839 and 1886.

This portrait of his sister was painted when Joanna was 11 years old.

Lady Sibell Rowley; Sotheby's, London, 21 July 2003; where acquired by present owner. The museum has agreed to carry out an Art Loss Register should a grant be awarded.
