This small painting shows a forest landscape rendered in broad brushstrokes, building the scene through the use of blocks of colour.

The painting is the first work by Hitchens, one of the most distinctive landscape artists of his time, to enter CheltenhamÂ’s growing collection of works by British artists from the early to mid-20th century.

Provenance

Purchased from the artist in 1962 by the donor; private collection (never publically exhibited).
