This etching compliments the collection of portraits of musicians at the Royal College of Music, in its portrayal of a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, aged seven, performing with his father and sister.
There are several known versions of the subject; this etching is after a watercolour by Louis Carmontelle. Correspondence indicates that Wolfgang's father, Leopold Mozart, purchased a number of impressions of the image to use as gifts when the family toured Europe.
