This elegant satinwood table was commissioned by Matthew Boulton, owner of Soho House in Handsworth, Birmingham, most likely for his daughter Anne, whose initials are written in pen above the makerÂ’s label.

Newton was a highly regarded producer of George III furniture, and Boulton – a successful industrialist – was his only non-aristocratic client. The writing table is typical of Newton’s outstanding craftsmanship, featuring intricate veneers and rosewood cross-banding. While the accompany mirror cannot be attributed to a particular maker, its neoclassical design and excellent condition make it a perfect fit for Soho House.

Provenance
