This picture is an outstanding example of the middle period of this great English landscape painter.

The shape of the canvas brings out and emphasizes the tall trees framing and revealing a distant view of the bridge and buildings. The foliage has the brilliancy and bravura of a late Constable while the blue sky is flecked with white clouds reminiscent of Claude Monet. The deep blue of the river in the middle foreground and the lighter blue of the peacocks upon the terrace enhance the sumptuous richness of the colour scheme.
