Moon-viewing Platform, the major work from Alison TurnbullÂ’s acclaimed exhibition Observatory, derives from architectural plans for the renovation of the Katsuma Imperial Villa near Kyoto in Japan.

The arrangement of the blue forms against the white ground was constructed by laying the plans over the building’s existing design. Structural elements removed as part of the renovation are represented by an over-painting in white – just visible as erasures. The darker blue circles and bars represent vertical columns. The work has been purchased through the Chipperfield Bequest Fund in order to celebrate the centenary of Southampton City Art Gallery.
