This cup is a beautiful object in its own right.

It demonstrates both the skills of Devon craftspeople in the 16th century and the importance attached to their communal religious worship by the inhabitants of the parish of Instow, who invested considerable resources into its purchase. The cup will be on display alongside the Museum's 17th century Barnstaple silver spoons and the 18th century Dissenters silver (purchased with Art Fund help in 2001) as examples of the silversmith's art and as part of the story of religious change in the area over the last 400 years.

Provenance

Instow parish.
