Magdalene Odundo is arguably the greatest master of pure sculptural form in ceramics working anywhere in the world today and her work takes African traditions as its starting point.

This work will enhance the Ashmolean's growing collection of contemporary studio ceramics. They have acquired a Alan Caiger-Smith bowl to show the development of tin-glaze from ninth-century Iraq to the present day; a vase by Gabrielle Koch to show how its burnished surface echoes early Egyptian pottery; and a bowl by Eddie Curtis echoes Chinese wares in its deep red copper glaze. Magdalene Odundo's work is rich in cross-cultural associations, to Africa and beyond.
