This painting links Valettes work directly with that of Monet as it clearly quotes from Monet's famous Gare St Lazare series. Manchester City Galleries possess the largest collection of Valette's work with 34 examples, including nine impressionistic paintings depicting Edwardian Manchesters streets and waterways cloaked in an industrial haze. These were produced from small, subtly-toned sketches made on the spot and are among his most appealing works.
