The Monologue paintings are produced in a single session, lasting anything up to twelve hours, for which the artist must prepare emotionally.

Innes has described them as 'instant paintings' as they cannot be reworked over weeks or months as he normally does. Many of the Monologues evoke natural phenomena of falling rain, mountain ranges, cave formations or the shadowy depths of a forest. Each of these can be seen in Monologue (Black) 4, whose massive brooding forms appear malevolent. Dundee are committed to collecting contemporary Scottish art.
